The Ojibwa district is starting its own Venturing Officers Association (VOA) to help promote venturing in Ojibwa district. The VOA is open to ALL youth venturers and not just venturers currently holding an office in their crew. Our first meeting will be on Monday March 22 at 7 PM at the Rochester Hills Precinct Building #5 located at 1551 East Auburn Road, Rochester Hills, 48307. We plan to hold elections, decide on a meeting schedule, establish by-laws and begin discussing Ojibwa VOA activities at our inaugural meeting. Although the first meeting will consist of more business than fun related items, the future meetings will involve more fun and exciting concepts. All crews are strongly encouraged to send as many interested youth and adult venturers to the meeting. For more information contact Chuck Coutteau at chuckcoutteau@gmail.com or Dave Putt at dputt5@yahoo.com.

roundtable-300x90The March 11 Ojibwa Roundtable will be held  at Trinity Lutheran Church on Van Dyke and M-59 (Hall Road).  We start the midway at  7:00.  The Midway is an opportunity for leaders and parents to get up to date information from our district and even council committees. Committee chairs and members of the commissioner’s staff are on hand to answer your questions and distribute their information.   Roundtable begins at 7:30 PM.   Following a joint opening we then split into separate roundtable breakouts based on whether your main interest is cub scouting, boy scouting or venturing.  Sometimes we may have an additional split to cover a training or a topic that is of general interest.  I hope that you will all join us for a night of learning and fellowship on March11.

Our joint opening topic is fencing. Yes, the kind of fencing that involves epees, swords and sabers!

The cub scout staff will be making presentations about utilizing den chiefs and summer camping opportunities.

The boy scout and venturing staffs will combine to discuss Backpacking part 1.  Part 2 will take place in April.

Three of the new academic belt loops are Photography, Good manners and Video games. The reason we mention these three belt loops is because cub scouts who attend the Ojibwa District Pinewood Derby (24 Hours of Ojibwa) on March 6 at the Chrysler Museum can complete the requirements for these new belt loops. So, in addition to a day of racing your pinewood derby car plan on completing the requirements for one, two or all three of these new belt loops!

To learn even more about ALL of the new belt loops plan on attending the Cub Scout Roundtable split at the next Ojibwa Roundtable on Thursday February 11 at Trinity Lutheran Church on Van Dyke just north of Hall Road in Utica. This will be one of our featured topics for February. See additional postings for other featured topics at our next roundtable.

The first is at the unit level and is called the Unit Award of Appreciation. We strongly encourage every unit to select one adult in their unit (or it could be someone outside of the unit that has done something remarkable for that unit) to receive this award. The person selected is then presented with the award certificate at the Annual District Dinner at Cherry Creek Golf Club on April 20, 2010. Normally, the unit pays for the cost of the dinner for the recipient. distawardofmerit

The other adult recognition award is called the District Award of Merit. This award is given to scouters that have rendered extraordinary service at the district level. You many nominate someone for this award and the nomination form is reviewed by the District Award of Merit Committee. We are allowed to select up to four nominees for this award in 2010. This award is also presented at the District Dinner. Since one may be a recipient of this award only one time and you would like to know if a certain scouter has already received this award, please contact  Dave Putt at  dputt5@yahoo.com.

Deadlines for submission of the awards are  March 15, 2010 for the District Award of Merit and  April 5, 2010 for the Unit Award of Appreciation. You can access the forms by clicking on the links below.
